Application Procedures

Admission Requirements:
1. A Bachelor's degree in Anthropology or a related discipline
2. Solid proficiency in English (proficiency at level B2 (CEFR)).
3. Successful completion of an Admission test (Eignungsfeststellungsprüfung). Admission tests take place during June 2020. We will inform you (via email) about the exact date and time by at least seven days before the Admission week.
4. Central Online Admission (see below, either through AlmaWeb or uniassist).


Application Procedure
There are slightly different application procedures, depending on whether you hold a German or non-German passport and whether you graduated from a German or a non-German university.

Foreign nationals please follow the two application requirements below:

a) Foreign nationals must additionally apply for admission to the University of Leipzig. The purpose of the application is to establish eligibility for a post-graduate study at a German university. Applicants holding a BA degree from a German university please apply via AlmaWeb. The system is open for applications between 4 May and 31 May 2020. This checklist will help you with the process. Foreign nationals holding a BA degree from a foreign University please apply for admission to the University of Leipzig via uniassist. Applications are accepted between 15 April and 31 May 2020 (Please note the postponed application start). This checklist will help you with the procedures. Please note that on uniassist, our program is listed as "MA-Ethnologie".

b) Foreign nationals must apply to the Institute of Anthropology for admission to the MA Anthropology. The application procedure is electronic. Please send an email with the following documents to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.: letter of intent to study Anthropology giving your reasons for application to Leipzig, your updated CV with marks, a copy of your graduation certificate and your transcript of records. Please provide proof of English language proficiency if applicable. Applications for the study program starting in October 2020 must reach the institute by 31 May 2020.


You will receive an email confirming the reception of your application. After checking your documents we will schedule an oral exam during June 2020. If you live outside Leipzig the exam may be held via phone or Skype. We will ask you to give a 10 minute presentation about an anthropological topic of your choice and then have an informal discussion about your desire to study at Leipzig. The exam will be held in English. The aim of the oral exam is to establish eligibility for the Master's study in Anthropology.
