MA Anthropology

The Institute of Anthropology in Leipzig offers a Master's (Master of Arts) degree program to students who have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology or a related discipline, and who want to further deepen their understanding and develop their academic skills. The MA in Anthropology is a two year program with a strong research orientation. Classes are taught in English and German. Core courses are offered in English. Electives might be taught in English or German. Please consult about language requirements before enrolling.

Year One: Intensive Coursework

During the first year students learn state-of-the-art theory and methods and train their advanced writing skills by writing a research proposal and an essay in the style of a journal article. Each semester students choose an area of specialty by selecting one or more elective course(s). Students can choose to take electives in African Studies, Oriental Studies, India/Tibet/Mongolian Studies, Museum or Global Studies.

Year Two: Research and Master's Thesis
During the second year students either plan and conduct a 6 month research project or complete an internship in Germany or abroad for their master's thesis. The master's projects and the writing of the master's theses are carried out under the supervision of the staff at the Institute of Anthropology. An optional student-organised MA Colloquium takes each Monday during the Fall semester in order to provide a space for current and incoming students to collaborate and discuss their research interests.
People suited for the Master's Program in Anthropology will have a desire to work in groups and on individual projects.
