Anthropology in Leipzig

The Institute of Anthropology at the University of Leipzig offers innovative and attractive programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The BA Anthropology introduces students to key concepts of the discipline, offers training in qualitative research methods and promotes regional expertise. We teach classical topics such as ritual dynamics, family relationships, visual politics and political anthropology and a wide range of current subjects such as the anthropology of globalisation, neoliberalism, war and conflict, transnationalism and sensory perception. The University of Leipzig has a unique strength in Areas Studies. Students can choose from a broad range of languages (such as Hausa, Swahili, Hindi, Arabic, Mongolian, Indonesian, Turkish, Tibetan and Persian). There is a strong expertise in the regions of South Asia, Middle East and Africa.

At the post-graduate level (MA Anthropology and PhD in Anthropology) we offer engaging and participatory training in advanced anthropological theory and methods, thorough and sustained guidance in developing and carrying out a research project and regular lecture series and seminars on current topics, including master classes with renowned anthropologists.

The Anthropology Department at the University of Leipzig systematically invests in university teaching and in training its employees. We strive to provide student-focused teaching and to continually expand our range of teaching methods. Of particular importance is helping students develop a gradual, step-by-step approach  in order to guide them through the intricacies of academic working methods. This incorporates critical reading of texts and systematic practice of different writing techniques. We train students in creating annotated bibliographies, writing scientific papers, research diaries, reviews and review essays. In addition to the classroom, we utilize different e-learning tools that promote work on projects and encourage teamwork. As a relatively small institution, with a manageable number of students, we are able to forge a close relationship with our students. The aim is to provide students the experience of being part of a learning and research community.
